A German defense tech firm is taking a different approach to drone interception with a system that launches from a gun-style launcher and takes down aerial threats by direct impact.
The “Talon” interceptor from Munich-based Auterion is designed to give mobile military units a quick way to engage enemy drones on the battlefield.
Rather than using an explosive warhead, Talon destroys its target by colliding with it directly.
The system runs on AuterionOS, the company’s operating system for autonomous drones, which is designed to help it navigate and operate in GPS-denied environments.
Talon also features a fire-and-forget mode. Once launched, its onboard tracking and terminal homing systems can take over to pursue the target without further human input.
The interceptor has already undergone testing with the German Army.
Simple Enough for a Soldier to Use
Auterion Chief Executive Lorenz Meier said the company’s approach is to make its interceptors simple enough for individual soldiers to operate.
Future versions could expand beyond handheld launchers, with potential integration into vehicle-based launchers and wider air defense networks.
These setups could help protect airports, government buildings, and other critical infrastructure.
“Single drone or swarm. Talon takes on both,” Auterion stated on social media.
