South Korea has introduced Ghost Commander II, a next-generation naval carrier concept designed to combine manned and unmanned systems within a unified command-and-control platform.

Developed by Hanwha Ocean, the vessel aims to redefine maritime power projection by integrating crewed aircraft alongside a wide range of unmanned aerial, surface, and underwater vehicles.

Intended for seaborne surveillance and reconnaissance missions, the concept shares design similarities with China’s Type 076 amphibious assault ship, according to lead engineer Jeon Seoungbaem.

Hanwha noted that Ghost Commander II is still in its early design phase, with specifications continuing to evolve.

The versatile platform was unveiled at MADEX 2025, the international maritime defense exhibition held recently in Busan, South Korea.

A Multi-Domain Command Platform

Ghost Commander II builds on the traditional aircraft carrier’s role by combining manned flight operations with extensive unmanned capabilities, creating a versatile naval command hub.

The vessel measures 240 meters (787 feet) in length and 60 meters (196 feet) in width, with a displacement of approximately 42,000 tons.

Its flight deck features an electromagnetic catapult, six helicopter pads, and two aircraft elevators, designed to efficiently launch and recover a variety of aerial assets.

Unlike conventional carriers, Ghost Commander II dedicates specialized decks to both crewed aircraft (fixed-wing and rotary-wing) and an array of unmanned systems. These include unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), unmanned surface vessels, and underwater drones, enabling a broad spectrum of mission profiles.

Hanwha identified the General Atomics Gray Eagle, a short takeoff and landing UAV, as a compatible drone for the platform, noting its successful launch from a South Korean warship during tests in November 2024.

Combat-Ready and Modular

Beyond air operations, the concept vessel is equipped with two vertical launch systems capable of firing up to 32 surface-to-air missiles to defend against aerial threats.

It also features LIG Nex1’s close-in weapon systems, arranged to provide comprehensive 360-degree protection.

Designed with modularity in mind, Ghost Commander II can be rapidly reconfigured to adapt to emerging threats and evolving mission requirements.
