Japan may have just offered a glimpse of its next-gen 1st Airborne Brigade: a land assault unit now paired with quadrupedal unmanned ground vehicles (Q-UGVs).
During the recent New Year descent training, two Ghost Robotics “robot dogs” joined the exercise, marking the first time Japan’s landing troops integrated Q-UGVs directly into simulated frontline operations.
The robotic platforms acted as reconnaissance units, advancing ahead of soldiers to scan the terrain and relay real-time situational data.
According to the Ground Self-Defense Force (GSDF), these systems could help detect threats before troops enter high-risk areas.
Joining the Force
Ghost Robotics’ Q-UGVs are lightweight and highly maneuverable, capable of navigating rough terrain while carrying sensors that feed critical information back to human operators.
Japan has previously deployed unmanned ground vehicles for airfield defense and assault support in situations where rapid response was needed.
The GSDF sees these systems as a key part of its modernization efforts, reinforcing its defense capabilities and improving situational awareness in dangerous regions.

The 1st Airborne Brigade is Japan’s primary force for high-risk landing, tasked with securing vulnerable zones.
Its annual descent training aims to showcase how soldiers execute complex missions, from helicopter air assault to coordinated ground operations.
The 2026 iteration highlighted the military’s growing reliance on unmanned systems, potentially making it a permanent feature of the country’s next-gen combat units.
