A British startup is pitching an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) concept designed to move across difficult terrain while keeping a low profile to avoid detection by enemy forces.
Developed by Stratonex Defence Technologies, the modular VARAN platform is intended to support frontline troops across a range of missions, including counter-drone operations, logistics, electronic warfare, and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR).
According to the company, VARAN uses passive sensing to map its surroundings without emitting radar or lidar signals that hostile forces could detect.
The UGV also features low visual, thermal, and acoustic signatures and is intended to navigate rough terrain in GPS-denied environments.

“The need is clear: move supplies, equipment and casualties through dangerous ground while reducing the exposure of the people doing it. That is the challenge our modular unmanned ground platform is built to address,” Stratonex stated on social media.
Move Farther, Carry More
VARAN features an open-systems architecture that allows military forces to configure the platform with different tactical payloads and integrate future technologies as battlefield requirements evolve.
Stratonex envisions the UGV helping British troops move farther and carry more during field missions while reducing their exposure to enemy threats.
Still in the concept stage, VARAN is open to feedback from experts who may help shape its development. The company has invited interested parties to share suggestions on the platform’s design and potential applications.
“The important question isn’t just what a platform can do on its own. It’s how it can be configured, integrated and used to support the people doing the job,” the firm stated.
