Nokia and Rheinmetall subsidiary blackned GmbH are teaming up to build a new kind of battlefield network for German forces: fast, mobile, and ready to deploy.

The duo is combining Nokia’s 5G tech with blackned’s software-based systems to create secure, high-performance communications for troops in the field.

The setup is meant to boost situational awareness, speed up decision-making, and keep units better connected across complex operations.

Designed for quick deployment and use in tough terrain, the system will plug into Rheinmetall’s Battlesuit platform and align with Germany’s broader push toward software-defined defense.

While the deal’s price tag hasn’t been shared, Nokia said the system is being built to scale, with uses that could stretch well beyond German borders.

“blackned is dedicated to advancing innovation in defense digitalization, and our agreement with Nokia represents an important milestone in that mission,” said Timo Zaiser, Chief Technology Officer at blackned.

“Together, we will provide powerful, flexible, and future-ready tactical network solutions built for the realities of modern defense.”

Nokia in Defense

Once best known for cell phones, Nokia is now applying its 4G/5G and IP technologies to defense, building secure, mission-ready communications for complex field operations.

Back in March, the Finnish firm teamed up with Lockheed Martin and Verizon to show how commercial 5G can hold its own on the battlefield. The demo plugged Nokia’s hardened 5G network into Lockheed’s tactical base station setup built for military use.

The test proved that devices could stay connected while hopping between different signal types, which could be a game-changer for troops on the move.

“In a rapidly evolving tactical environment, speed, mobility, and adaptability are paramount,” stated Giuseppe Targia, Head of Space and Defense at Nokia.

“Through the partnership with blackned, our 5G technology will empower defense forces to deploy robust communication capabilities swiftly and share intelligence more effectively, providing our customers with a decisive advantage on the battlefield.”
