Thailand has taken a crucial step in reinforcing its eastern borders with new 8×8 amphibious wheeled armored vehicles (AWAVs) built to expand its land-to-sea operational capability.
The vehicles are engineered to support missions including emergency response, sovereignty protection, and border security.
They can operate in coordination with the Royal Thai Navy’s landing platform dock vessels to support amphibious mission requirements.

Each AWAV is equipped with a machine gun and an integrated control system, along with communications capabilities linked to the navy’s broader operational network.
The hull is reportedly built to meet NATO ballistic and blast protection standards, providing enhanced protection against a range of threats.
At least seven AWAVs are now in early operational use with the Royal Thai Navy, where they are being evaluated for mission performance and combat readiness in real-world conditions.

The 8×8 vehicles are developed by a team of Thai engineers from Chaiseri Metal and Rubber Co. using local facilities and machinery.
Around 40 percent of the AWAV’s components are sourced domestically, supporting local supply chains and reducing reliance on foreign imports.

According to Royal Thai Navy Spokesperson Rear Admiral Parach Rattanachaiphan, the arrival of new amphibious vehicles “not only elevates the navy’s capabilities, but also concretely advances Thailand’s defense industry development policy.”
Further procurement of additional 8×8 vehicles is being considered as part of future capability expansion plans.
