US-based Wave Engine Corporation has debuted the Scitor-P unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), showcasing its wave engine propulsion as a cost-cutting alternative to traditional jet systems.

The debut took place at the Department of Defense’s Technology Readiness Experimentation (T-REX) 25-2 exercise, one of the Pentagon’s top venues for demonstrating emerging capabilities.

The Scitor-P — short for “Production” — is the third and latest iteration of the Scitor UAV series and features a top-mounted J-1 wave engine designed for simplicity, modularity, and affordability.

“With multiple successful flight demonstrations for customers this year, we are advancing on our mission to forever change the rules for flight propulsion,” said Daanish Maqbool, CEO of Wave Engine Corp.

“We believe the impact will be widespread, including for the rapidly growing counter-UAS sector that requires high interception speeds at low cost and high volume.”

Next-Gen Propulsion Explained

Wave engines operate without rotating parts, generating thrust through pressure waves in a hollow tube via intermittent combustion.

Most UAVs and aircraft today rely on conventional jet or turbofan engines with spinning compressors and turbines, which add complexity, weight, and cost.

Wave Engine Corporation said the pressure-wave approach can boost speed while simplifying propulsion, making it a potential game-changer for unmanned platforms.

The T-REX demonstration capped a successful summer of testing that included flights at the Bush Combat Development Complex where the UAV carried simulated tactical payloads.
