Boeing and the US Air Force have pulled off a training milestone: linking a T-7A Red Hawk flight simulator with a live jet in real time.

The demo tied the ground-based simulator’s synthetic environment to an actual aircraft in flight, letting both pilots interact as if they were sharing the same battlespace.

The jet flew more than 130 miles (210 kilometers) from the simulator while maintaining a stable, high-fidelity data stream — a key factor for realistic mission rehearsal.

Boeing called the trial a breakthrough in blended training, central to the Pentagon’s drive to lower costs, preserve frontline fleets, and accelerate combat preparations for pilots.

“This is about more than a jet trainer — it’s about building a digital backbone for the future of air combat readiness,” the company stated.

Inside the Red Hawk

Developed by Boeing and Saab, the T-7A was selected in 2018 under the US Air Force’s T-X program to replace the aging T-38 Talon.

The twin-seat, single-engine jet is designed to prepare pilots for fifth-generation fighters such as the F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightning II.

Powered by a General Electric F404 engine, the Red Hawk can push past Mach 1.2 (920 miles/1,480 kilometers per hour). It features digital fly-by-wire controls, open-architecture avionics, and a design built entirely with advanced 3D modeling.

At 14 meters (46 feet) long with a 9.7-meter (32-foot) wingspan, it offers improved agility and performance than its predecessor.

A fully integrated simulator suite mirrors the cockpit and avionics of real jets, allowing student pilots to transition seamlessly between ground training and live flying.

Strategic Impact

The test fits into the Pentagon’s push to merge live, virtual, and constructive systems into a unified training network. It represents an evolution from the T-38 era, when pilots trained without digital avionics or synthetic environments.

This approach lets the air force save costly flight hours on combat aircraft while still providing realistic training scenarios.

The Red Hawk is set to enter service later this decade.
