Switzerland is boosting its military’s concealment capabilities with multispectral camouflage, turning to three European defense firms to hide vehicles, personnel, and infrastructure from drones, radar, and infrared sensors.

After extensive testing, the country’s defense procurement agency (Armasuisse) awarded contracts to SSZ Camouflage Technology AG of Switzerland, Saro GmbH of Germany, and Saab of Sweden.

The procurement covers 14 separate lots, each awarded to the supplier whose solution best met Switzerland’s technical and operational needs.

The evaluation considered performance capability, integration potential, and logistical and economic factors.

By splitting contracts among several firms, Armasuisse aims to boost technological diversity, strengthen supply chains, and keep Switzerland’s defense industry competitive.

The program also aligns with Switzerland’s Armament Policy Strategy, which calls for stronger domestic industry involvement while maintaining access to leading European technologies.

Multispectral Camouflage Tech

Multispectral camouflage provides protection against modern reconnaissance systems that detect far beyond the human eye.

Ground and airborne sensors, particularly drones, detect visual and infrared signals across multiple bands, while radar tracks targets via backscattered microwaves.

Switzerland’s new multispectral camouflage adapts an object’s visual, infrared, and radar profile to its surroundings, reducing detection across multiple bands.

The technology enables vehicles, personnel, and infrastructure to blend with their surroundings under changing light and weather conditions, countering the latest surveillance threats.
