Saab has pulled the curtain back on a full-scale concept model of its stealthy supersonic autonomous fighter jet, offering an early look at a potential loyal wingman for future air combat operations.
Called A3-001, the concept incorporates cloud-native software architecture, low observability, advanced autonomous systems, and the ability to operate across multiple domains.
It features a software-defined design that separates intelligence, control logic, and functions from the hardware, with a centralized software layer managing them.
The aircraft is intended for a range of high-risk missions such as electronic warfare, air defense suppression, and precision strikes in contested environments.
Rather than adapting a legacy human-piloted aircraft or depending on a remote operator, the system can be operated entirely under artificial intelligence control.
However, Saab has not disclosed specific performance figures for the concept, including its dimensions, range, speed, payload, or propulsion system.
Advancing ACP Program
According to TWZ, the A3-001 is part of the Autonomous Collaborative Platform (ACP) program, which falls under Sweden’s broader KFS project (Koncept för Framtida Stridsflygplan or Concept for Future Combat Aircraft).
Under this effort, the company is already working on the A1 and A2 uncrewed technology demonstrators with funding from the country’s defense ministry.
The A3-001 concept builds on that work, showing how technologies developed through the demonstrators could eventually be combined into an operational system.
“We are currently in an intensive development phase where, together with Sweden, we are exploring technologies that will lay the foundation for the next generation of combat air systems,” said Peter Nilsson, head of the Advanced Programs business unit at Saab.
“As part of this work, we intend to fly uncrewed demonstrators with fighter-like characteristics before 2030 as we support Sweden in considering their future options.”
Saab showcased the A3-001 during the Jubilee Air Show at Malmen Air Base in Sweden.
