US firm Applied Intuition is trying to solve one of the key challenges in autonomous aviation: autonomy software restricted to a single unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).
Called Drone Stack, the software-defined system is built for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions and aims to reduce the time needed to develop and integrate autonomous functions.
The platform includes software-in-the-loop simulation, hardware-in-the-loop testing, a dedicated flight test facility, and a development environment designed to replicate real-world operations.
Applied Intuition said Drone Stack can reduce software development timelines from months to days or even hours by providing tools for faster integration.

The system can be installed on different aircraft with sufficient onboard computing power, ranging from tactical UAVs to quadcopters.
Its capabilities include mission planning, autonomous navigation, multi-aircraft coordination, detection and tracking using embedded automated target recognition models, and precision mission support.
A key component of Drone Stack is Axle, an embedded computing system available in ruggedized configurations for larger aircraft and compact versions for smaller platforms.
According to Applied Intuition, both versions are built around the same validation and security standards the company uses across its commercial products.
Supporting Affordable Mass
The launch comes amid growing adoption of commercially available technology for battlefield use over purpose-built systems with lengthy development timelines.
The approach aligns with the US Department of Defense’s concept of affordable mass, which emphasizes deploying greater quantities of capable but cost-effective platforms.

Drone Stack is designed to support this model by allowing autonomy software to be adapted across multiple aircraft rather than developed separately for each platform.
