Kongsberg is expanding its maritime surveillance beneath the surface with a new sonar system designed to detect, classify, and track underwater threats.

The Aegir Subsea Situational Awareness (SSA) features advanced acoustic technology along with an AI-powered virtual sonar operator service that enables operation with minimal human intervention.

The AI system can be configured for specific missions and trained with operators’ expertise to retain and apply their knowledge during deployment.

According to the Norwegian company, it can be deployed across small uncrewed surface vessels, buoys, fixed installations, and larger maritime platforms.

Kongsberg will demonstrate the system at the ONS 2026 event, where visitors can view a live data feed from an operational Aegir SSA installation in Oslofjord, Norway.

The deployed sonar pairs Fugro’s SEAWATCH buoy platform with the Oslofjord Testbed to deliver continuous offshore monitoring and real-time subsea sensing.

Tackling Underwater Threats

The launch of Aegir SSA comes as maritime infrastructure becomes increasingly important to energy security, transportation, and offshore activity.

Heavy traffic, shallow waterways, floating debris, and unauthorized activity can pose threats that conventional monitoring systems often struggle to identify.

The system aims to provide operators with actionable underwater situational awareness while supporting safer navigation and more informed decision-making.

“The underwater domain has become a critical operational environment for both commercial and government operators,” said Helge André Sundt, vice president of subsea awareness at Kongsberg.

“With Aegir SSA, we are bringing KONGSBERG sonar expertise into a purpose-built product family designed to enhance security, safety, and operational awareness in demanding maritime environments.”
