Joby Aviation has kicked off a new era in long-range vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) operations with the successful first flight of its turbine-electric demonstrator.

The aircraft recently lifted off from the company’s Marina, California, site and will continue ground and airborne testing ahead of operational demonstrations with the US government customers.

Built on Joby’s all-electric air taxi platform, the demonstrator pairs a hybrid turbine powertrain with the SuperPilot autonomous stack, extending range while increasing payload capacity. 

The turbine-electric setup also reportedly delivers the endurance needed for multi-role military missions and longer-range commercial operations.

Vertical agility allows the aircraft to deploy from forward locations without runway infrastructure, broadening its utility in both civilian and defense settings.

The hybrid platform is expected to support extended air taxi routes and military missions that require adaptable, autonomous aircraft for dispersed operations.


In Tandem With L3Harris

The start of flight testing came just three months after Joby Aviation announced the hybrid concept alongside a new partnership with L3Harris Technologies.

Under the collaboration, L3Harris will integrate sensors, effectors, communications, and collaborative autonomy to tailor the system for government missions.

Both companies plan to begin operational demonstrations in 2026, focusing on defense roles such as contested logistics, low-altitude support, and loyal wingman tasks.

The effort aligns with US government priorities for resilient, autonomous, and hybrid aircraft, with more than $9 billion requested in the fiscal 2026 budget for next-generation platforms.

“The future battlefield relies on unmanned systems augmenting manned platforms, and our partnership with Joby accelerates missionized VTOL aircraft to directly support defense requirements,” said Jason Lambert, President of Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance at L3Harris.

“L3Harris has delivered thousands of missionized aircraft, and our focus is scaling rapidly to bring these commercial VTOL aircraft to the fight.”
