The Indian Air Force (IAF) just dropped its first public video of the S-400 air defense system in action, showcasing what it calls the “longest ever air kill recorded in military history.”

The footage opens with radar imagery detecting an incoming jet, followed by the S-400 triggering the air defense sequence.

As the missile streaks toward its target, on-screen tracking data continues to update in real time, culminating in a graphic overlay declaring the engagement as the record-longest air kill.

According to the IAF, the video was part of the Vayu Shakti live-fire drill held on February 27 in Rajasthan, India.

Procurement Timeline

In 2018, India signed a deal with Moscow for five S-400 Triumf air defense missile systems as part of a broader push to modernize its national security architecture.

The first system arrived in 2021, with the second and third delivered in 2022 and 2023.

The $5.4-billion contract was initially set to finish by 2024, but Russia’s war in Ukraine delayed final delivery to 2026.

S-400 at a Glance

The S-400 is a long-range surface-to-air missile system capable of detecting aircraft, drones, and missile threats.

It can reportedly engage targets at distances up to 400 kilometers (248 miles) and altitudes reaching 30 kilometers (18.6 miles).

Its multifunction radar arrays provide early warning and link with broader air defense networks, enabling integrated, coordinated operations across multiple layers of defense.
