California startup Grid Aero has emerged from stealth with the Lifter-Lite, an autonomous cargo drone it dubs “the pickup truck of the skies.”

Built in just six months, the unmanned vehicle can carry thousands of pounds across vast distances and scale to mission requirements, offering flexibility in payload and range.

It blends traditional controls with artificial intelligence to deliver supplies overseas and support intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions even in contested airspace.

“Ultimately, our customer can inform how many thousands of pounds they want us to carry, and the range is a bit more set by geography,” said Arthur Dubois, CEO of Grid Aero. “Once the requirements emerge, what we will do is scale the platform around that.”

The company envisions the Lifter-Lite carrying “anything a warfighter needs,” from medical kits and mission gear to weapons.

Pentagon Interest and 2027 Goal

Founded only a year ago, Grid Aero has already raised $6 million in seed funding and secured a Direct-to-Phase II Small Business Innovation Research award from the US Air Force’s innovation arm.

The award supports development of the drone’s ground system, the tools personnel will use to control, refuel, and reload a fleet.

“Lifter aircraft operate as a resilient, distributed mesh. With seamless fleet-level supervision, a small ground team can command dozens of aircraft across vast regions,” the company stated.

Grid Aero plans to have the Lifter-Lite in service with US forces, particularly in the Pacific, by 2027.

Dubois emphasized that the early traction with the Pentagon underscores the lack of low-cost, heavy-lift, long-range uncrewed aircraft supporting defense logistics.

“The key for us is not that we built an aircraft,” he said. “It’s that we’re going to solve this problem, however the warfighter wants it.”
