What if drone interceptors no longer needed rocket motors?
The US Army has partnered with California-based Auriga Space to explore an electromagnetic launch system designed to counter drone swarms at a fraction of the cost.
Called Hermes, the technology uses electricity and magnetic levitation to launch interceptors, enabling thousands of engagements while reducing reliance on conventional rocket motors and their supply chains.
It utilizes electricity and magnetic levitation, which essentially increases how much military forces can fire while also lowering the costs per engagement.
By eliminating the need for solid rocket motors, the system could lower per-shot costs, simplify logistics, and speed the delivery of counter-drone capabilities to frontline forces.
Auriga Space said Hermes is built into a containerized platform that can be deployed from forward operating bases, naval vessels, or fixed sites protecting critical infrastructure.
The system is scheduled for its first outdoor flight test this summer, marking the transition from laboratory validation to real-world operational testing.
The Drone Swarm Problem
The rapid spread of low-cost attack drones in recent conflicts has exposed a growing imbalance in air defense, forcing militaries to expend expensive interceptors against relatively cheap threats.

Conventional interceptors also depend on solid rocket motors that require specialized materials and manufacturing, creating supply chain constraints that can slow production and replenishment.
Hermes is designed to address both challenges through electromagnetic launch, eliminating the need for rocket motors while enabling rapid reloads and high-volume interceptor launches.
Without a conventional gun barrel, the system can be reloaded and fired again within seconds, allowing troops to engage multiple targets without waiting for logistics resupply.
Army Partnership
Hermes will be developed in partnership with the US Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Armaments Center under a three-year cooperative research agreement.
Both parties will share technical expertise and testing data without exchanging funds, allowing the Army to evaluate the technology before deciding whether to pursue future procurement.
