Scientists at the Research Institute of Saint-Louis (ISL) have taken electromagnetic railguns a step closer to real-world use after successfully firing the system in its first open-range trial.
Unlike previous laboratory demonstrations, the projectile traveled through open air along its intended trajectory, marking the first time the technology has been tested outside a controlled environment.
Although the launch lasted only milliseconds, ISL said it capped years of research and testing while marking the beginning of efforts to evaluate the railgun under more realistic operating conditions.
The institute is now working to scale the technology for multiple-shot capability while exploring different launcher integrations and new munitions designed specifically for electromagnetic launch.

The demonstration was conducted under ISL’s Railgun Free Flight Facility program, a two-year initiative bringing together experts from across the institute to advance electromagnetic launcher technology.
Why Railguns Matter
Unlike conventional weapons that rely on chemical propellants, railguns use electrical energy to accelerate projectiles, offering a launch method that could support a wider range of trajectories.
For military forces, this could extend the reach of naval weapons beyond 200 kilometers (124 miles) while improving lethality and reducing operating costs.
ISL said the defense industry has shown growing interest in electromagnetic railguns, including their potential to counter emerging hypersonic threats.
Despite the milestone, the institute emphasized that the technology still requires years of research, testing, and qualification before it can be considered for operational use.
