A containerized concept for the US Navy’s 60-kilowatt-class HELIOS laser weapon is beginning to take shape as American lawmakers push to expand funding for more mobile directed energy systems.

The proposed architecture would allow the laser system to be deployed across a wider range of vessels, including aircraft carriers, amphibious warfare ships, expeditionary sea bases, sealift vessels, and surface combatants.

The concept could provide an additional layer of close-in defense against drones, fast attack craft, and incoming missiles, while also expanding potential use in fixed-site or shore-based defense roles.

Unlike the HELIOS system integrated aboard the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS Preble, however, a containerized configuration could face greater exposure to environmental stress and combat damage depending on deployment conditions.

The containerized concept is expected to receive additional support through a proposed $5 million allocation in the fiscal year 2027 budget.

HELIOS at a Glance

Developed by Lockheed Martin, HELIOS is a directed-energy weapon designed to support both hard-kill and soft-kill operations against modern aerial and maritime threats.

It generates more than 60 kilowatts of directed energy while offering a layered defense capability combining surveillance, dazzling, and laser engagement functions.

The company described the weapon as having a deep magazine, low cost per engagement, and speed-of-light response time for naval defense missions.

HELIOS currently has an operational range of up to five miles (8 kilometers) and is positioned for future upgrades that could increase output to 120 kilowatts.

The system has already undergone testing aboard the USS Preble, where it successfully engaged a surrogate drone target.
