Torpedoes may no longer pose the same challenge to naval forces, as Ultra Maritime unveiled a new integrated defense concept that can automatically select between hard-kill, soft-kill, or electronic warfare responses.

The company’s Layered Torpedo Defense solution fuses advanced sensing, real-time passive threat detection, and precision countermeasures into a single ecosystem.

It keeps an open ear for any inbound threats and alerts operators of any confirmed targets, with the system also capable of analyzing the situation to recommend the most appropriate engagement response.

At the core of the system is the US Navy’s MK58 compact rapid-attack weapon, designed to engage and eliminate threats at range before they can endanger the vessel.

As a second layer of defense, the system can deploy soft-kill measures such as Ultra Maritime’s Defender, intended to confuse and delay incoming torpedoes.

For threats that penetrate earlier layers, a towed array sonar provides a final defensive layer for naval vessels.

Protecting Against the Modern Threat

Ultra Maritime draws on more than three decades of undersea warfare expertise in developing its Layered Torpedo Defense.

The company points to its globally deployed towed arrays and torpedo warning systems as evidence of a mature foundation for reducing the engagement timeline.

It describes the concept as “a smarter, faster, and more effective way to protect ships, crews, and missions from traditional and evolving undersea threats.”

“Through the application of key technologies, Ultra Maritime is able to revolutionize the way torpedo defense is performed,” the company said in a promotional video.

“Together, these changes represent a monumental step up in the defense of our navies against the modern torpedo threat.”
