Teledyne FLIR has taken its next-gen airborne imaging pod on a cross-Canada demo tour, showcasing the Star SAFIRE’s UltraFORCE 380X variant from the nose of a helicopter.
A four-person crew flew over 10 cities across seven provinces to demonstrate the multi-spectral imaging system, featuring infrared and color cameras with continuous zoom and low-light capability.
The new variant is nearly identical to the base Star SAFIRE model, but its UltraFORCE designation means it is free from international restrictions.
At just over 65 pounds (29.5 kilograms), it is designed as a compact alternative to heavier imaging pods without sacrificing performance.
“Infrared’s hidden superpower is its ability to see through smoke,” said Teledyne Business Development Lead Brian Spillane. “With shortwave infrared, you can see incredible detail right up against the fire line without heat bloom distorting the image.”
The new Star SAFIRE variant could become a useful tool for military operators, with its long focal length optics potentially aiding troops in covert surveillance missions.
Inside the 380X
The 380X packs its full suite of “image aiding capabilities” into a single modular pod, allowing easier hardware and software upgrades to existing Star SAFIRE systems.
It introduces “intelligent imaging” modifications such as multi-tile management that let operators watch videos from different sources at once, while customizable icons simplify menu navigation.
A built-in de-scintillation filter helps sharpen long-distance views by cutting through haze and other atmospheric distortions.
The system also features augmented reality mapping that overlays live action with contextual data, enhancing situational awareness and decision-making.
“The new 380X skillet reduces operator workload for faster, smarter decision support,” the company stated on their website. “Its impressive enhancements reduce operator workload and boost visibility for faster, smarter critical decision making.”
