Spain has successfully launched Europe’s “most advanced” communications satellite, significantly enhancing the operational efficiency of the Spanish Armed Forces.
Named the “SpainSat NG I,” the space asset was launched on Friday by a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral in Florida.
It features a cutting-edge communication module weighing over 2 tons and standing 6 meters (19.7 feet) tall — the largest satellite system ever deployed in Spain.
The satellite operates across three frequency bands — X-band, military Ka-band, and UHF — ensuring secure, long-range communications for tactical operations.
Its active antenna system can detect, geolocate, and mitigate interference with high precision. It can also withstand radiation, allowing the asset to survive a potential nuclear blast.
The SpainSat NG I is expected to begin operations by mid-2025.
‘A Qualitative Leap in Capabilities’
Spain’s new satellite has been equipped with hundreds of sophisticated electronic units, enabling it to handle multiple communication channels, improve data security, and enhance reliability.
They also make the space asset more adaptable to different frequencies and space conditions.
The SpainSat NG I will reportedly provide coverage to up to two-thirds of the Earth’s surface for the next 15 years.
Its primary mission is to ensure effective command and control for the Spanish Armed Forces, especially in areas that lack secure communication infrastructure.
According to Thales, one of the developers of the SpainSat NG I, the launch of the new generation satellite represents a “qualitative leap” in Spain’s space industry capabilities.
It also brings the country within reach of some of the top countries in space.
Madrid is currently developing SpainSat NG I’s twin satellite, SpainSat NG II, which is expected to provide more coverage for the Spanish military.
