Saab has introduced an innovative drone training system designed to simulate both friendly and hostile scenarios during military exercises.
Presented at a recent conference in Florida, the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) trainer integrates with Saab’s EXCON software, allowing for the preparation, planning, execution, control, and evaluation of diverse training scenarios.
It is equipped with a laser targeting system, allowing it to engage participants virtually and simulate getting shot down by ground forces.
Additionally, the system can accommodate additional sensors and simulated weapons depending on training needs.
As a Threat
One standout feature of Saab’s UAV trainer is its ability to replicate aerial threats from opposing forces.
It can be engaged and defeated, offering trainees a realistic combat experience.
The system can also simulate airstrikes by dropping virtual munitions on ground forces while capturing video to assess soldiers’ skills and tactical behavior.
“We see the increased use of military UAVs on the battlefield,” said Joakim Alhbin, Saab’s head for training and simulation. “The need for a solution that makes soldiers ready to detect, engage, and hide from these is crucial.”
First Customer
Saab revealed that the UAV trainer was initially offered to the British military to support counter-drone training.
However, the system quickly garnered significant interest from other potential customers.
The company recently announced that it had secured an order for several UAV trainer prototypes from an undisclosed client.
