Russian pro-military channels have showcased footage claimed to show a new laser weapon designed to engage drones, though the claims have not been independently verified, and no Russian government or military agency has confirmed them.
A Russian military blogger, who described the footage as an “exclusive,” posted the video along with claims that several such systems are now protecting strategic sites in southwestern Russia and have destroyed several hundred Ukrainian drones.
Defence Blog, which first reported the footage, noted that neither the casualty figures nor the deployment details have been corroborated by independent sources.
The footage shows the weapon housed inside a shipping-container-style enclosure, alongside what appear to be separate targeting and guidance components and an operator station used to run the system.
Further details remain undisclosed, but its visible exterior elements likely include an optical lens, external cabling, and structural bracing attached to the main container.
The imagery also captures a purple beam emerging from the aperture and extending into the sky.
“I am not inclined to overestimate this innovative type of weapon… but combined with traditional air defense systems, a combat laser will definitely be useful for protecting the country from air raids,” said the blogger.
“It is also gratifying that we not only have such combat ‘purple beams,’ but they have also proven their effectiveness. Now these ‘Jedi swords’ need to be developed and constantly improved. Such is the path.”
Claims of Second-Generation System
The same blogger post claims a newer version of the system is being readied to engage faster-moving threats such as tactical aircraft and cruise missiles.
“Only we have sensational footage of the destruction of Ukrainian drones in the sky by a combat Russian laser complex,” the blogger added.
“Several of these laser installations now cover our strategic facilities in the southwest of the country.”
