Japanese naval forces appear to be testing a new anti-ship missile that performs a tactical rolling maneuver during its final approach.

Footage showed the missile lifting off from the ground, cruising low over water, then executing a spiral roll as it closed in on a target.

The weapon is reportedly powered by a subsonic propulsion system built for endurance and range, and is believed to be compatible with land-based launchers, hinting at multi-domain deployment potential.

It is expected to rely on a combination of radio-frequency and infrared sensors to maintain a target lock in contested maritime environments, even under jamming attempts.

Based on its look, the missile seemed designed more for stealth and survivability than speed, focusing on shape and low observability rather than sheer velocity.

While official details remain undisclosed, the footage suggests a cruise missile-style body with pop-out wings and stabilizers for smoother, steadier flight.

Japan’s Naval Muscles

The anti-ship missile could be Japan’s answer to rising maritime tensions in the Western Pacific.

It could serve as a first wave in coordinated attacks, penetrating initial ship defenses before heavier strike missiles move in. 

With the country’s Acquisition, Technology & Logistics Agency yet to announce an official designation, reports are calling it the “New SSM” missile, linking it to the Type 12 anti-ship family.
