Rohde & Schwarz and TRUMPF have joined forces to create a fully European counter-drone system designed to spot, track, and take down hostile unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
The partnership combines Rohde & Schwarz’s radar and electromagnetic spectrum expertise with TRUMPF’s high-energy laser technology.
It will aim at protecting critical infrastructure and securing restricted airspace as drone incursions continue to rise.
By developing the system domestically, the team is also positioning the project as a sovereign alternative to foreign-built defense tech.

Lasers in the Loop
The concept centers on a layered approach where sensors detect and classify incoming drones before a laser system engages the target.
TRUMPF’s directed-energy component is being integrated directly into Rohde & Schwarz’s existing counter-UAV ecosystem.
Once complete, the system is expected to track multiple threats and neutralize them with precision and minimal collateral disruption.
Both companies said the tech will be used exclusively for defensive purposes as they push toward a fieldable, scalable anti-drone solution.
“We are proud to partner with TRUMPF to offer a truly sovereign solution for drone defense,” said Alexander Orellano, Head of Division Technology Systems at Rohde & Schwarz.
“This collaboration leverages the strengths of both companies to address critical security needs. Investing in European defense, and specifically counter-drone technology, is of utmost importance.”
