India is advancing its drone arsenal with a next-gen vehicle capable of operating in both air and underwater environments.
Developed by AquaAirX Autonomous Systems, AVATAAR’s structure is crafted from corrosion-resistant carbon fiber and coated with specialized materials to protect its sensors from harsh maritime conditions.
It is equipped with an acoustic communication modem for reliable underwater links and Ultra-Short Baseline navigation for precise positioning.

AVATAAR also incorporates multi-beam imaging sonar for detailed seabed mapping and integrated LED (light-emitting diode) lights to improve visibility in low-light environments.
“This kind of innovation shows how Indian startups are increasingly moving beyond consumer tech into deep-tech, robotics, and defense innovation,” the company stated.
“And as global security and surveillance technologies evolve, solutions like this could become critical for navies, coastal security forces, and strategic operations.”
AVATAAR Mission Roles
Short for Amphibious Vehicle for Autonomous Tactical Aerial & Aquatic Reconnaissance, AVATAAR can be used for multi-domain surveillance and threat detection across ports, berths, and coastal approaches.
In loitering munition missions, it reportedly provides long-endurance and precision target acquisition.

It also supports tactical intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance operations, delivering real-time data across littoral and near-shore areas.
After every underwater mission, AVATAAR is flushed with freshwater to remove salt deposits, maintaining durability and operational performance for repeated deployments.
